What Is Kruti Dev Font?

Kruti Dev is a Hindi font that hides Devanagari letters behind English keyboard keys. That is why a file typed in it can turn into random English-looking letters on a computer that does not have the font.

Here is the quick picture. You type the keys H k k j r with the Kruti Dev font turned on, and the screen shows भारत. Switch the font off, or open the file on a phone, and you are left with Hkkjr. The Hindi was never stored as Hindi. Only the English keys were stored, and the font drew the Hindi shapes on top.

Why Kruti Dev text breaks

Because the Hindi lives only inside the font, the text breaks the moment the font goes missing. It happens in everyday situations:

Changing the font to Mangal does not fix it. Mangal reads those English keys literally, so you still see Hkkjr. The text needs to be converted, not restyled.

Quick check. Click on the text in Word and look at the font name. If it says Kruti Dev 010 (or a similar name) and the Hindi looks fine, your file is Kruti Dev. If the Hindi looks fine in a different font such as Mangal or Nirmala UI, it is probably Unicode already.

Kruti Dev 010 and other fonts

Kruti Dev 010 is the version most people mean when they say Kruti Dev. Devlys and Chanakya are different Hindi fonts of the same old kind, but they place letters on different keys. So Devlys text cannot be read as Kruti Dev, and the other way round. Before you convert anything, check which font your file uses.

Where it is still used

Many offices, print shops and typing practice setups kept using Kruti Dev because their old files and habits are built around it. Some Hindi typing tests are also taken in this layout. If your work needs it, keep using it. For anything that goes online, Unicode is the right choice, which is covered in our guide to Krutidev vs Unicode.
