Lakh and crore: the Indian number format

In the Indian system the last three digits form one group, and the digits before that are grouped in twos. That is why 100000 is written 1,00,000 (one lakh) and 10000000 is written 1,00,00,000 (one crore). The international style would write the same numbers as 100,000 and 10,000,000.

Turn on the Indian commas option above and the tool adds the commas for you, in English or Hindi digits. Numbers with 10 digits and numbers starting with zero are left alone, because they are usually phone numbers or codes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert English numbers to Hindi numbers?

Paste your text, keep English to Hindi selected and copy the result. Each digit from 0 to 9 is replaced with its Devanagari form from ० to ९. Letters, spaces and symbols stay as they are, so you can paste a whole sentence.

Are Hindi numbers and Devanagari numerals the same thing?

Yes. Hindi digits are the Devanagari form of the same numbers you write as 1, 2, 3. The digit ५ has exactly the same value as 5. Only the shape of the digit changes, not the number.

Can I convert Hindi numbers back to English?

Yes. Choose Hindi to English, paste text with digits like १२३ and you get 123. Only the digits change, so the rest of your text stays untouched.

What is the Indian comma format?

In the Indian system the last three digits are grouped first and then the rest in groups of two. So 100000 becomes 1,00,000, which is one lakh, and 10000000 becomes 1,00,00,000, which is one crore. Turn on the comma option to format numbers this way.

Will it change dates, phone numbers or years?

Digits inside dates and phone numbers are converted like any other digit. With the comma option on, 10-digit numbers and numbers that start with zero are left without commas, because they are usually phone numbers or codes. Read the result once before using it.

Can I use the result in Word or Excel?

In Word, yes. Excel may treat Devanagari digits as text instead of numbers, so formulas may not work on them. Keep a copy with English digits for any calculation.
